The First Book of Moses, called Genesis

Chapter 16

1

Now Sarai Abram's wife bare1 him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name [was] Hagar.

2

And Sarai said4 unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained1 me from bearing:2 I pray thee, go in3 unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children11 by her. And Abram hearkened4 to the voice of Sarai.

3

And Sarai Abram's wife took4 Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt2 ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave4 her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

4

And he went in4 unto Hagar, and she conceived:4 and when she saw4 that she had conceived,1 her mistress was despised4 in her eyes.

5

And Sarai said4 unto Abram, My wrong [be] upon thee: I have given1 my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw4 that she had conceived,1 I was despised4 in her eyes: the LORD judge4 between me and thee.

6

But Abram said4 unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid [is] in thy hand; do3 to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly17 with her, she fled4 from her face.

7

And the angel of the LORD found4 her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

8

And he said,4 Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest1 thou? and whither wilt thou go?4 And she said,4 I flee6 from the face of my mistress Sarai.

9

And the angel of the LORD said4 unto her, Return3 to thy mistress, and submit100 thyself under her hands.

10

And the angel of the LORD said4 unto her, I will multiply55 thy seed exceedingly,53 that it shall not be numbered11 for multitude.

11

And the angel of the LORD said4 unto her, Behold, thou [art] with child, and shalt bear6 a son, and shalt call1 his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard1 thy affliction.

12

And he will be a wild man; his hand [will be] against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell4 in the presence of all his brethren.

13

And she called4 the name of the LORD that spake6 unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said,1 Have I also here looked1 after him that seeth me?

14

Wherefore the well was called1 Beerlahairoi; 2416 7203 883 behold, [it is] between Kadesh and Bered.

15

And Hagar bare4 Abram a son: and Abram called4 his son's name, which Hagar bare,1 Ishmael.

16

And Abram [was] fourscore 8141 and six years old, when Hagar bare2 Ishmael to Abram.
