The Second Book of Moses, Called Exodus

Chapter 17

1

And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed4 from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched4 in Rephidim: and [there was] no water for the people to drink.2

2

Wherefore the people did chide4 with Moses, and said,4 Give3 us water that we may drink.4 And Moses said4 unto them, Why chide4 ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt17 the LORD?

3

And the people thirsted4 there for water; and the people murmured55 against Moses, and said,4 Wherefore [is] this [that] thou hast brought us up52 out of Egypt, to kill53 us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

4

And Moses cried4 unto the LORD, saying,2 What shall I do4 unto this people? they be almost ready to stone1 me.

5

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, Go on3 before the people, and take3 with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest52 the river, take3 in thine hand, and go.1

6

Behold, I will stand6 before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite52 the rock, and there shall come water out1 of it, that the people may drink.1 And Moses did4 so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

7

And he called4 the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted15 the LORD, saying,2 Is the LORD among us, or not?

8

Then came4 Amalek, and fought11 with Israel in Rephidim.

9

And Moses said4 unto Joshua, Choose3 us out men, and go out,3 fight10 with Amalek: to morrow I will stand12 on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

10

So Joshua did4 as Moses had said1 to him, and fought9 with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up1 to the top of the hill.

11

And it came to pass, when Moses held up55 his hand, that Israel prevailed:1 and when he let down55 his hand, Amalek prevailed.1

12

But Moses' hands [were] heavy; and they took4 a stone, and put4 [it] under him, and he sat4 thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up1 his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down2 of the sun.

13

And Joshua discomfited4 Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

14

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, Write3 this [for] a memorial in a book, and rehearse3 [it] in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly2 put out4 the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

15

And Moses built4 an altar, and called4 the name of it Jehovahnissi: 5251 3071

16

For he said,4 Because the LORD hath sworn 3676 [that] the LORD [will have] war with Amalek from generation to generation.
