The Fourth Book of Moses, called Numbers

Chapter 21

1

And [when] king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt6 in the south, heard4 tell that Israel came6 by the way of the spies; then he fought11 against Israel, and took4 [some] of them prisoners.

2

And Israel vowed4 a vow unto the LORD, and said,4 If thou wilt indeed2 deliver4 this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy52 their cities.

3

And the LORD hearkened4 to the voice of Israel, and delivered up4 the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed55 them and their cities: and he called4 the name of the place Hormah.

4

And they journeyed4 from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass2 the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged4 because of the way.

5

And the people spake17 against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up52 out of Egypt to die2 in the wilderness? for [there is] no bread, neither [is there any] water; and our soul loatheth1 this light bread.

6

And the LORD sent17 fiery serpents among the people, and they bit17 the people; and much people of Israel died.4

7

Therefore the people came4 to Moses, and said,4 We have sinned,1 for we have spoken14 against the LORD, and against thee; pray100 unto the LORD, that he take away55 the serpents from us. And Moses prayed101 for the people.

8

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, Make3 thee a fiery serpent, and set3 it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten,7 when he looketh1 upon it, shall live.1

9

And Moses made4 a serpent of brass, and put4 it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten1 any man, when he beheld52 the serpent of brass, he lived.1

10

And the children of Israel set forward,4 and pitched4 in Oboth.

11

And they journeyed4 from Oboth, and pitched4 at Ijeabarim, 5856 in the wilderness which [is] before Moab, toward the sunrising. 8121

12

From thence they removed,1 and pitched4 in the valley of Zared.

13

From thence they removed,1 and pitched4 on the other side of Arnon, which [is] in the wilderness that cometh out6 of the coasts of the Amorites: for Arnon [is] the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

14

Wherefore it is said11 in the book of the wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,

15

And at the stream of the brooks that goeth down1 to the dwelling2 of Ar, and lieth8 upon the border of Moab.

16

And from thence [they went] to Beer: that [is] the well whereof the LORD spake1 unto Moses, Gather3 the people together, and I will give4 them water.

17

Then Israel sang4 this song, Spring up,3 O well; sing3 ye unto it:

18

The princes digged1 the well, the nobles of the people digged1 it, by [the direction of] the lawgiver,26 with their staves. And from the wilderness [they went] to Mattanah:

19

And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth:

20

And from Bamoth [in] the valley, that [is] in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh8 toward Jeshimon.

21

And Israel sent4 messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,2

22

Let me pass4 through thy land: we will not turn4 into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink4 [of] the waters of the well: [but] we will go4 along by the king's [high] way, until we be past4 thy borders.

23

And Sihon would not suffer1 Israel to pass2 through his border: but Sihon gathered4 all his people together, and went out4 against2 Israel into the wilderness: and he came4 to Jahaz, and fought11 against Israel.

24

And Israel smote55 him with the edge of the sword, and possessed4 his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon [was] strong.

25

And Israel took4 all these cities: and Israel dwelt4 in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.

26

For Heshbon [was] the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought8 against the former king of Moab, and taken4 all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon.

27

Wherefore they that speak in proverbs6 say,4 Come3 into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built11 and prepared:113

28

For there is a fire gone out1 of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it hath consumed1 Ar of Moab, [and] the lords of the high places of Arnon.

29

Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone,1 O people of Chemosh: he hath given1 his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

30

We have shot4 at them; Heshbon is perished1 even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste55 even unto Nophah, which [reacheth] unto Medeba.

31

Thus Israel dwelt4 in the land of the Amorites.

32

And Moses sent4 to spy out15 Jaazer, and they took4 the villages thereof, and drove out55 3423 4 the Amorites that [were] there.

33

And they turned4 and went up4 by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out4 against2 them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.

34

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, Fear4 him not: for I have delivered1 him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do1 to him as thou didst1 unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt6 at Heshbon.

35

So they smote55 him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left52 him alive: and they possessed4 his land.
