The Book of Joshua

Chapter 1

1

Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake4 unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister,18 saying,2

2

Moses my servant is dead;1 now therefore arise,3 go over3 this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give6 to them, [even] to the children of Israel.

3

Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread4 upon, that have I given1 unto you, as I said14 unto Moses.

4

From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.

5

There shall not any man be able to stand101 before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, [so] I will be with thee: I will not fail55 thee, nor forsake4 thee.

6

Be strong3 and of a good courage:3 for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance55 the land, which I sware8 unto their fathers to give2 them.

7

Only be thou strong3 and very courageous,3 that thou mayest observe2 to do2 according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded14 thee: turn4 not from it [to] the right hand or [to] the left, that thou mayest prosper55 whithersoever thou goest.4

8

This book of the law shall not depart4 out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate1 therein day and night, that thou mayest observe4 to do2 according to all that is written7 therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous,55 and then thou shalt have good success.55

9

Have not I commanded14 thee? Be strong3 and of a good courage;3 be not afraid,4 neither be thou dismayed:11 for the LORD thy God [is] with thee whithersoever thou goest.4

10

Then Joshua commanded17 the officers6 of the people, saying,2

11

Pass3 through the host, and command16 the people, saying,2 Prepare54 you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over6 this Jordan, to go in2 to possess2 the land, which the LORD your God giveth6 you to possess2 it.

12

And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, spake1 Joshua, saying,2

13

Remember2 the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded14 you, saying,2 The LORD your God hath given you rest,56 and hath given1 you this land.

14

Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain4 in the land which Moses gave1 you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass4 before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help1 them;

15

Until the LORD have given your brethren rest,55 as [he hath given] you, and they also have possessed1 the land which the LORD your God giveth6 them: then ye shall return1 unto the land of your possession, and enjoy1 it, which Moses the LORD'S servant gave1 you on this side Jordan toward the sunrising. 8121

16

And they answered4 Joshua, saying,2 All that thou commandest14 us we will do,4 and whithersoever thou sendest4 us, we will go.4

17

According as we hearkened1 unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken4 unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.

18

Whosoever [he be] that doth rebel55 against thy commandment, and will not hearken4 unto thy words in all that thou commandest17 him, he shall be put to death:93 only be strong3 and of a good courage.3
