The Book of Judges

Chapter 2

1

And an angel of the LORD came up4 from Gilgal to Bochim, and said,4 I made you to go up55 out of Egypt, and have brought55 you unto the land which I sware8 unto your fathers; and I said,4 I will never 5769 break55 my covenant with you.

2

And ye shall make4 no league with the inhabitants6 of this land; ye shall throw down4 their altars: but ye have not obeyed1 my voice: why have ye done1 this?

3

Wherefore I also said,1 I will not drive them out17 from before you; but they shall be [as thorns] in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

4

And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake15 these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up4 their voice, and wept.4

5

And they called4 the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed4 there unto the LORD.

6

And when Joshua had let the people go,17 the children of Israel went4 every man unto his inheritance to possess2 the land.

7

And the people served4 the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived52 3117 310 Joshua, who had seen1 all the great works of the LORD, that he did1 for Israel.

8

And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died,4 [being] an hundred and ten years old.

9

And they buried4 him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.

10

And also all that generation were gathered8 unto their fathers: and there arose4 another generation after them, which knew1 not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done1 for Israel.

11

And the children of Israel did4 evil in the sight of the LORD, and served4 Baalim:

12

And they forsook4 the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out56 of the land of Egypt, and followed4 310 other gods, of the gods of the people that [were] round about them, and bowed101 themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger.55

13

And they forsook4 the LORD, and served4 Baal and Ashtaroth.

14

And the anger of the LORD was hot4 against Israel, and he delivered4 them into the hands of spoilers6 that spoiled4 them, and he sold4 them into the hands of their enemies6 round about, so that they could1 not any longer stand2 before their enemies.6

15

Whithersoever they went out,1 the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said,14 and as the LORD had sworn8 unto them: and they were greatly distressed.4

16

Nevertheless the LORD raised up55 judges,6 which delivered55 them out of the hand of those that spoiled6 them.

17

And yet they would not hearken1 unto their judges,6 but they went a whoring1 after other gods, and bowed101 themselves unto them: they turned1 quickly out of the way which their fathers walked1 in, obeying2 the commandments of the LORD; [but] they did1 not so.

18

And when the LORD raised them up52 judges,6 then the LORD was with the judge,6 and delivered52 them out of the hand of their enemies6 all the days of the judge:6 for it repented11 the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed5 them and vexed6 them.

19

And it came to pass, when the judge6 was dead, [that] they returned,4 and corrupted52 [themselves] more than their fathers, in following2 310 other gods to serve2 them, and to bow down99 unto them; they ceased52 not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

20

And the anger of the LORD was hot4 against Israel; and he said,4 Because that this people hath transgressed1 my covenant which I commanded14 their fathers, and have not hearkened1 unto my voice;

21

I also will not henceforth55 drive out53 any from before them of the nations which Joshua left1 when he died:4

22

That through them I may prove15 Israel, whether they will keep6 the way of the LORD to walk2 therein, as their fathers did keep1 [it], or not.

23

Therefore the LORD left55 those nations, without driving them out53 hastily; neither delivered1 he them into the hand of Joshua.
