The Second Book of Samuel

Chapter 7

1

And it came to pass, when the king sat1 in his house, and the LORD had given him rest52 round about from all his enemies;6

2

That the king said4 unto Nathan the prophet, See3 now, I dwell6 in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth6 within curtains.

3

And Nathan said4 to the king, Go,3 do3 all that [is] in thine heart; for the LORD [is] with thee.

4

And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying,2

5

Go3 and tell1 my servant David, Thus saith1 the LORD, Shalt thou build4 me an house for me to dwell in?2

6

Whereas I have not dwelt1 in [any] house since the time that I brought up53 the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked102 in a tent and in a tabernacle.

7

In all [the places] wherein I have walked98 with all the children of Israel spake14 I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded14 to feed2 my people Israel, saying,2 Why build1 ye not me an house of cedar?

8

Now therefore so shalt thou say4 unto my servant David, Thus saith1 the LORD of hosts, I took1 thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:

9

And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest,1 and have cut off55 all thine enemies6 out of thy sight, and have made1 thee a great name, like unto the name of the great [men] that [are] in the earth.

10

Moreover I will appoint1 a place for my people Israel, and will plant1 them, that they may dwell1 in a place of their own, and move4 no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict15 them any more,55 as beforetime,

11

And as since the time that I commanded14 judges6 [to be] over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest52 from all thine enemies.6 Also the LORD telleth52 thee that he will make4 thee an house.

12

And when thy days be fulfilled,4 and thou shalt sleep1 with thy fathers, I will set up52 thy seed after thee, which shall proceed4 out of thy bowels, and I will establish52 his kingdom.

13

He shall build4 an house for my name, and I will stablish31 the throne of his kingdom for ever.

14

I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity,53 I will chasten52 him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:

15

But my mercy shall not depart away4 from him, as I took52 [it] from Saul, whom I put away52 before thee.

16

And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established8 for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established12 for ever.

17

According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak14 unto David.

18

Then went4 king David in, and sat4 before the LORD, and he said,4 Who [am] I, O Lord GOD? and what [is] my house, that thou hast brought52 me hitherto?

19

And this was yet a small thing4 in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken17 also of thy servant's house for a great while to come. And [is] this the manner of man, O Lord GOD?

20

And what can David say15 more55 unto thee? for thou, Lord GOD, knowest1 thy servant.

21

For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done1 all these great things, to make thy servant know53 [them].

22

Wherefore thou art great,1 O LORD God: for [there is] none like thee, neither [is there any] God beside thee, according to all that we have heard1 with our ears.

23

And what one nation in the earth [is] like thy people, [even] like Israel, whom God went1 to redeem2 for a people to himself, and to make2 him a name, and to do2 for you great things and terrible,12 for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst1 to thee from Egypt, [from] the nations and their gods?

24

For thou hast confirmed34 to thyself thy people Israel [to be] a people unto thee for ever: and thou, LORD, art become1 their God.

25

And now, O LORD God, the word that thou hast spoken14 concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, establish54 [it] for ever, and do3 as thou hast said.14

26

And let thy name be magnified4 for ever, saying,2 The LORD of hosts [is] the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established12 before thee.

27

For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed1 241 to thy servant, saying,2 I will build4 thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found1 in his heart to pray99 this prayer unto thee.

28

And now, O Lord GOD, thou [art] that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised17 this goodness unto thy servant:

29

Therefore now let it please54 thee to bless16 the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord GOD, hast spoken14 [it]: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed29 for ever.
