The Second Book of the Kings

Chapter 1

1

Then Moab rebelled4 against Israel after the death of Ahab.

2

And Ahaziah fell down4 through a lattice in his upper chamber that [was] in Samaria, and was sick:4 and he sent4 messengers, and said4 unto them, Go,3 enquire3 of Baalzebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover4 of this disease.

3

But the angel of the LORD said14 to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise,3 go up3 to meet2 the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say16 unto them, [Is it] not because [there is] not a God in Israel, [that] ye go6 to enquire2 of Baalzebub the god of Ekron?

4

Now therefore thus saith1 the LORD, Thou shalt not come down4 from that bed on which thou art gone up,1 but shalt surely2 die.4 And Elijah departed.4

5

And when the messengers turned back4 unto him, he said4 unto them, Why are ye now turned back?1

6

And they said4 unto him, There came a man up1 to meet2 us, and said4 unto us, Go,3 turn again3 unto the king that sent1 you, and say14 unto him, Thus saith1 the LORD, [Is it] not because [there is] not a God in Israel, [that] thou sendest6 to enquire2 of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down4 from that bed on which thou art gone up,1 but shalt surely2 die.4

7

And he said17 unto them, What manner of man [was he] which came up1 to meet2 you, and told17 you these words?

8

And they answered4 him, [He was] an hairy man, 376 and girt7 with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said,4 It [is] Elijah the Tishbite.

9

Then the king sent4 unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up4 to him: and, behold, he sat6 on the top of an hill. And he spake17 unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said,14 Come down.3

10

And Elijah answered4 and said17 to the captain of fifty, If I [be] a man of God, then let fire come down4 from heaven, and consume4 thee and thy fifty. And there came down4 fire from heaven, and consumed4 him and his fifty.

11

Again4 also he sent4 unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered4 and said17 unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said,1 Come down3 quickly.

12

And Elijah answered4 and said17 unto them, If I [be] a man of God, let fire come down4 from heaven, and consume4 thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down4 from heaven, and consumed4 him and his fifty.

13

And he sent4 again4 a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up,4 and came4 and fell4 on his knees before Elijah, and besought101 him, and said17 unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious4 in thy sight.

14

Behold, there came fire down1 from heaven, and burnt up4 the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: therefore let my life now be precious4 in thy sight.

15

And the angel of the LORD said17 unto Elijah, Go down3 with him: be not afraid4 of him. And he arose,4 and went down4 with him unto the king.

16

And he said17 unto him, Thus saith1 the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast sent1 messengers to enquire2 of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, [is it] not because [there is] no God in Israel to enquire2 of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down4 off that bed on which thou art gone up,1 but shalt surely2 die.4

17

So he died4 according to the word of the LORD which Elijah had spoken.14 And Jehoram reigned4 in his stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah; because he had no son.

18

Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did,1 [are] they not written7 in the book of the chronicles 3117 of the kings of Israel?
