The Book of Esther

Chapter 6

1

On that night could not1 the king sleep, and he commanded4 to bring53 the book of records of the chronicles; 3117 and they were read12 before the king.

2

And it was found11 written,7 that Mordecai had told52 of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's chamberlains, the keepers6 of the door, who sought14 to lay2 hand on the king Ahasuerus.

3

And the king said,4 What honour and dignity hath been done8 to Mordecai for this? Then said4 the king's servants that ministered18 unto him, There is nothing done8 for him.

4

And the king said,4 Who [is] in the court? Now Haman was come1 into the outward court of the king's house, to speak2 unto the king to hang2 Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared52 for him.

5

And the king's servants said4 unto him, Behold, Haman standeth6 in the court. And the king said,4 Let him come in.4

6

So Haman came in.4 And the king said4 unto him, What shall be done2 unto the man whom the king delighteth1 to honour? Now Haman thought4 in his heart, To whom would the king delight4 to do2 honour more than to myself?

7

And Haman answered4 the king, For the man whom the king delighteth1 to honour,

8

Let the royal apparel be brought55 which the king [useth] to wear,1 and the horse that the king rideth1 upon, and the crown royal which is set8 upon his head:

9

And let this apparel and horse be delivered2 to the hand of one of the king's most noble princes, that they may array52 the man [withal] whom the king delighteth1 to honour, and bring52 him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim1 before him, Thus shall it be done11 to the man whom the king delighteth1 to honour.

10

Then the king said4 to Haman, Make haste,16 [and] take3 the apparel and the horse, as thou hast said,14 and do3 even so to Mordecai the Jew, that sitteth6 at the king's gate: let nothing fail55 of all that thou hast spoken.14

11

Then took4 Haman the apparel and the horse, and arrayed55 Mordecai, and brought him on horseback55 through the street of the city, and proclaimed4 before him, Thus shall it be done11 unto the man whom the king delighteth1 to honour.

12

And Mordecai came again4 to the king's gate. But Haman hasted8 to his house mourning, and having his head covered.6

13

And Haman told17 Zeresh his wife and all his friends6 every [thing] that had befallen1 him. Then said4 his wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, If Mordecai [be] of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun52 to fall,2 thou shalt not prevail4 against him, but shalt surely2 fall4 before him.

14

And while they [were] yet talking18 with him, came52 the king's chamberlains, and hasted55 to bring53 Haman unto the banquet that Esther had prepared.1
