Chapter 40

1

To the chief Musician,18 A Psalm of David.
I waited14 patiently15 for the LORD; and he inclined4 unto me, and heard4 my cry.

2

He brought me up55 also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set55 my feet upon a rock, [and] established31 my goings.

3

And he hath put4 a new song in my mouth, [even] praise unto our God: many shall see4 [it], and fear,4 and shall trust4 in the LORD.

4

Blessed [is] that man that maketh1 the LORD his trust, and respecteth1 not the proud, nor such as turn aside6 to lies.

5

Many, O LORD my God, [are] thy wonderful works12 [which] thou hast done,1 and thy thoughts [which are] to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order2 unto thee: [if] I would declare55 and speak17 [of them], they are more1 than can be numbered.15

6

Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire;1 mine ears hast thou opened:1 burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.1

7

Then said1 I, Lo, I come:1 in the volume of the book [it is] written7 of me,

8

I delight1 to do2 thy will, O my God: yea, thy law [is] within my heart.

9

I have preached14 righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained4 my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.1

10

I have not hid14 thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared1 thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed14 thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

11

Withhold4 not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve4 me.

12

For innumerable 4557 evils have compassed1 me about: mine iniquities have taken hold52 upon me, so that I am not able1 to look up;2 they are more1 than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth1 me.

13

Be pleased,3 O LORD, to deliver53 me: O LORD, make haste3 to help me.

14

Let them be ashamed4 and confounded4 together that seek18 after my soul to destroy2 it; let them be driven11 backward and put to shame11 that wish me evil.

15

Let them be desolate4 for a reward of their shame that say6 unto me, Aha, aha.

16

Let all those that seek18 thee rejoice4 and be glad4 in thee: let such as love6 thy salvation say4 continually, The LORD be magnified.4

17

But I [am] poor and needy; [yet] the Lord thinketh4 upon me: thou [art] my help and my deliverer;18 make no tarrying,17 O my God.
