The Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Chapter 31

1

Woe to them that go down6 to Egypt for help; and stay11 on horses, and trust4 in chariots, because [they are] many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong;1 but they look1 not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek1 the LORD!

2

Yet he also [is] wise, and will bring55 evil, and will not call back52 his words: but will arise1 against the house of the evildoers,56 and against the help of them that work6 iniquity.

3

Now the Egyptians [are] men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD shall stretch out55 his hand, both he that helpeth6 shall fall,1 and he that is holpen7 shall fall down,1 and they all shall fail4 together.

4

For thus hath the LORD spoken1 unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring4 on his prey, when a multitude of shepherds6 is called forth11 against him, [he] will not be afraid11 of their voice, nor abase4 himself for the noise of them: so shall the LORD of hosts come down4 to fight2 for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof.

5

As birds flying,6 so will the LORD of hosts defend55 Jerusalem; defending2 also he will deliver52 [it; and] passing over2 he will preserve52 it.

6

Turn3 ye unto [him from] whom the children of Israel have deeply52 revolted.

7

For in that day every man shall cast away4 his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made1 unto you [for] a sin.

8

Then shall the Assyrian fall1 with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour4 him: but he shall flee1 from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited.

9

And he shall pass over4 to his strong hold for fear, and his princes shall be afraid1 of the ensign, saith7 the LORD, whose fire [is] in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.
