The Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Chapter 53

1

Who hath believed52 our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?8

2

For he shall grow up4 before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see4 him, [there is] no beauty that we should desire4 him.

3

He is despised12 and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted7 with grief: and we hid as it were56 [our] faces from him; he was despised,12 and we esteemed1 him not.

4

Surely he hath borne1 our griefs, and carried1 our sorrows: yet we did esteem1 him stricken,7 smitten94 of God, and afflicted.30

5

But he [was] wounded21 for our transgressions, [he was] bruised30 for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace [was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.8

6

All we like sheep have gone astray;1 we have turned1 every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid52 on him the iniquity of us all.

7

He was oppressed,8 and he was afflicted,12 yet he opened4 not his mouth: he is brought93 as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers6 is dumb,8 so he openeth4 not his mouth.

8

He was taken27 from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare34 his generation? for he was cut off8 out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

9

And he made4 his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done1 no violence, neither [was any] deceit in his mouth.

10

Yet it pleased1 the LORD to bruise15 him; he hath put [him] to grief:52 when thou shalt make4 his soul an offering for sin, he shall see4 [his] seed, he shall prolong55 [his] days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper4 in his hand.

11

He shall see4 of the travail of his soul, [and] shall be satisfied:4 by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify55 many; for he shall bear4 their iniquities.

12

Therefore will I divide17 him [a portion] with the great, and he shall divide17 the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out52 his soul unto death: and he was numbered8 with the transgressors;6 and he bare1 the sin of many, and made intercession55 for the transgressors.6
