The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah

Chapter 36

1

And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, [that] this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,2

2

Take3 thee a roll of a book, and write1 therein all the words that I have spoken14 unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake14 unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day.

3

It may be that the house of Judah will hear4 all the evil which I purpose6 to do2 unto them; that they may return4 every man from his evil way; that I may forgive1 their iniquity and their sin.

4

Then Jeremiah called4 Baruch the son of Neriah: and Baruch wrote4 from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which he had spoken14 unto him, upon a roll of a book.

5

And Jeremiah commanded17 Baruch, saying,2 I [am] shut up;7 I cannot 3201 4 go2 into the house of the LORD:

6

Therefore go1 thou, and read1 in the roll, which thou hast written1 from my mouth, the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD'S house upon the fasting day: and also thou shalt read4 them in the ears of all Judah that come out6 of their cities.

7

It may be they will present4 their supplication before the LORD, and will return4 every one from his evil way: for great [is] the anger and the fury that the LORD hath pronounced14 against this people.

8

And Baruch the son of Neriah did4 according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded14 him, reading2 in the book the words of the LORD in the LORD'S house.

9

And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, [that] they proclaimed1 a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came6 from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.

10

Then read4 Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe,6 in the higher court, at the entry of the new gate of the LORD'S house, in the ears of all the people.

11

When Michaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard4 out of the book all the words of the LORD,

12

Then he went down4 into the king's house, into the scribe's6 chamber: and, lo, all the princes sat6 there, [even] Elishama the scribe,6 and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.

13

Then Michaiah declared55 unto them all the words that he had heard,1 when Baruch read2 the book in the ears of the people.

14

Therefore all the princes sent4 Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, unto Baruch, saying,2 Take3 in thine hand the roll wherein thou hast read1 in the ears of the people, and come.3 So Baruch the son of Neriah took4 the roll in his hand, and came4 unto them.

15

And they said4 unto him, Sit down3 now, and read3 it in our ears. So Baruch read4 [it] in their ears.

16

Now it came to pass, when they had heard2 all the words, they were afraid1 both one and other, and said4 unto Baruch, We will surely53 tell55 the king of all these words.

17

And they asked1 Baruch, saying,2 Tell54 us now, How didst thou write1 all these words at his mouth?

18

Then Baruch answered4 them, He pronounced4 all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote6 [them] with ink in the book.

19

Then said4 the princes unto Baruch, Go,3 hide10 thee, thou and Jeremiah; and let no man know4 where ye be.

20

And they went in4 to the king into the court, but they laid up52 the roll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe,6 and told55 all the words in the ears of the king.

21

So the king sent4 Jehudi to fetch2 the roll: and he took4 it out of Elishama the scribe's6 chamber. And Jehudi read4 it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes which stood6 beside the king.

22

Now the king sat6 in the winterhouse 2779 in the ninth month: and [there was a fire] on the hearth burning30 before him.

23

And it came to pass, [that] when Jehudi had read2 three or four leaves, he cut4 it with the penknife, 5608 6 and cast53 [it] into the fire that [was] on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed2 in the fire that [was] on the hearth.

24

Yet they were not afraid,1 nor rent1 their garments, [neither] the king, nor any of his servants that heard6 all these words.

25

Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession52 to the king that he would not burn2 the roll: but he would not hear1 them.

26

But the king commanded17 Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, 4429 and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take2 Baruch the scribe6 and Jeremiah the prophet: but the LORD hid55 them.

27

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned2 the roll, and the words which Baruch wrote1 at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,2

28

Take3 thee again3 another roll, and write3 in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath burned.1

29

And thou shalt say4 to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus saith1 the LORD; Thou hast burned1 this roll, saying,2 Why hast thou written1 therein, saying,2 The king of Babylon shall certainly2 come4 and destroy52 this land, and shall cause to cease52 from thence man and beast?

30

Therefore thus saith1 the LORD of Jehoiakim king of Judah; He shall have none to sit6 upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out94 in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.

31

And I will punish1 him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring52 upon them, and upon the inhabitants6 of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced14 against them; but they hearkened1 not.

32

Then took1 Jeremiah another roll, and gave4 it to Baruch the scribe,6 the son of Neriah; who wrote4 therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned1 in the fire: and there were added8 besides unto them many like words.
