The Book of Amos

Chapter 1

1

The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw1 concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

2

And he said,4 The LORD will roar4 from Zion, and utter4 his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds6 shall mourn,1 and the top of Carmel shall wither.1

3

Thus saith1 the LORD; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away55 [the punishment] thereof; because they have threshed2 Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:

4

But I will send14 a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour1 the palaces of Benhadad.

5

I will break1 also the bar of Damascus, and cut off52 the inhabitant6 from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth6 the sceptre from the house of Eden: 5731 1040 and the people of Syria shall go into captivity1 unto Kir, saith1 the LORD.

6

Thus saith1 the LORD; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away55 [the punishment] thereof; because they carried away captive53 the whole captivity, to deliver [them] up53 to Edom:

7

But I will send14 a fire on the wall of Gaza, which shall devour1 the palaces thereof:

8

And I will cut off52 the inhabitant6 from Ashdod, and him that holdeth6 the sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn52 mine hand against Ekron: and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,1 saith1 the Lord GOD.

9

Thus saith1 the LORD; For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away55 [the punishment] thereof; because they delivered up53 the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered1 not the brotherly covenant:

10

But I will send14 a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall devour1 the palaces thereof.

11

Thus saith1 the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away55 [the punishment] thereof; because he did pursue2 his brother with the sword, and did cast off14 all pity, and his anger did tear4 perpetually, and he kept1 his wrath for ever:

12

But I will send14 a fire upon Teman, which shall devour1 the palaces of Bozrah.

13

Thus saith1 the LORD; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away55 [the punishment] thereof; because they have ripped up2 the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge53 their border:

14

But I will kindle52 a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour1 the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind:

15

And their king shall go1 into captivity, he and his princes together, saith1 the LORD.
