The Book of Amos

Chapter 6

1

Woe to them [that are] at ease in Zion, and trust6 in the mountain of Samaria, [which are] named7 chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!1

2

Pass3 ye unto Calneh, and see;3 and from thence go3 ye to Hamath the great: 7227 7237 2579 then go down3 to Gath of the Philistines: [be they] better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?

3

Ye that put far away18 the evil day, and cause the seat2 of violence to come near;55

4

That lie6 upon beds of ivory, and stretch7 themselves upon their couches, and eat6 the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;

5

That chant6 to the sound of the viol, [and] invent1 to themselves instruments of musick, like David;

6

That drink6 wine in bowls, and anoint4 themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved8 for the affliction of Joseph.

7

Therefore now shall they go captive4 with the first that go captive,6 and the banquet of them that stretched7 themselves shall be removed.1

8

The Lord GOD hath sworn8 by himself, saith7 the LORD the God of hosts, I abhor18 the excellency of Jacob, and hate1 his palaces: therefore will I deliver up52 the city with all that is therein.

9

And it shall come to pass, if there remain11 ten men in one house, that they shall die.1

10

And a man's uncle shall take him up,1 and he that burneth18 him, to bring out53 the bones out of the house, and shall say1 unto him that [is] by the sides of the house, [Is there] yet [any] with thee? and he shall say,1 No. Then shall he say,1 Hold thy tongue:16 for we may not make mention53 of the name of the LORD.

11

For, behold, the LORD commandeth,18 and he will smite52 the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.

12

Shall horses run4 upon the rock? will [one] plow4 [there] with oxen? for ye have turned1 judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:

13

Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought, which say,6 Have we not taken1 to us horns by our own strength?

14

But, behold, I will raise up56 against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith7 the LORD the God of hosts; and they shall afflict1 you from the entering in2 of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.
