The Book of Habakkuk

Chapter 2

1

I will stand4 upon my watch, and set101 me upon the tower, and will watch17 to see2 what he will say17 unto me, and what I shall answer55 when I am reproved.

2

And the LORD answered4 me, and said,4 Write3 the vision, and make [it] plain16 upon tables, that he may run4 that readeth6 it.

3

For the vision [is] yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak,55 and not lie:17 though it tarry,118 wait16 for it; because it will surely2 come,4 it will not tarry.17

4

Behold, his soul [which] is lifted up27 is not upright1 in him: but the just shall live4 by his faith.

5

Yea also, because he transgresseth6 by wine, [he is] a proud man, neither keepeth at home,4 who enlargeth52 his desire as hell, and [is] as death, and cannot be satisfied,4 but gathereth4 unto him all nations, and heapeth4 unto him all people:

6

Shall not all these take up4 a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say,4 Woe to him that increaseth56 [that which is] not his! how long? and to him that ladeth56 himself with thick clay!

7

Shall they not rise up4 suddenly that shall bite6 thee, and awake4 that shall vex47 thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them?

8

Because thou hast spoiled1 many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil4 thee; because of men's blood, and [for] the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell6 therein.

9

Woe to him that coveteth6 an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set2 his nest on high, that he may be delivered9 from the power of evil!

10

Thou hast consulted1 shame to thy house by cutting off2 many people, and hast sinned6 [against] thy soul.

11

For the stone shall cry out4 of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer4 it.

12

Woe to him that buildeth6 a town with blood, and stablisheth31 a city by iniquity!

13

Behold, [is it] not of the LORD of hosts that the people shall labour4 in the very fire, and the people shall weary4 themselves for very vanity?

14

For the earth shall be filled11 with the knowledge2 of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover17 the sea.

15

Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink,56 that puttest18 thy bottle to [him], and makest [him] drunken15 also, that thou mayest look53 on their nakedness!

16

Thou art filled1 with shame for glory: drink3 thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered:10 the cup of the LORD'S right hand shall be turned11 unto thee, and shameful spewing [shall be] on thy glory.

17

For the violence of Lebanon shall cover17 thee, and the spoil of beasts, [which] made them afraid,55 because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell6 therein.

18

What profiteth52 the graven image that the maker6 thereof hath graven1 it; the molten image, and a teacher56 of lies, that the maker6 of his work trusteth1 therein, to make2 dumb idols?

19

Woe unto him that saith6 to the wood, Awake;54 to the dumb stone, Arise,3 it shall teach!55 Behold, it [is] laid over7 with gold and silver, and [there is] no breath at all in the midst of it.

20

But the LORD [is] in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence16 before him.
