Chapter 1

iakwboV qeou kai kuriou ihsou cristou douloV taiV dwdeka fulaiV taiV en th diaspora cairein
1:1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.

pasan caran hghsasqe adelfoi mou otan peirasmoiV peripeshte poikiloiV
1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

3

ginwskonteV oti to dokimion umwn thV pistewV katergazetai upomonhn
1:3 Knowing [this], that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

4

h de upomonh ergon teleion ecetw ina hte teleioi kai oloklhroi en mhdeni leipomenoi
1:4 But let patience have [her] perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

5

ei de tiV umwn leipetai sofiaV aiteitw para tou didontoV qeou pasin aplwV kai mh oneidizontoV kai doqhsetai autw
1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all [men] liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

aiteitw de en pistei mhden diakrinomenoV o gar diakrinomenoV eoiken kludwni qalasshV anemizomenw kai ripizomenw
1:6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

mh gar oiesqw o anqrwpoV ekeinoV oti lhyetai ti para tou kuriou
1:7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

8

anhr diyucoV akatastatoV en pasaiV taiV odoiV autou
1:8 A double minded man [is] unstable in all his ways.

9

kaucasqw de o adelfoV o tapeinoV en tw uyei autou
1:9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:

10

o de plousioV en th tapeinwsei autou oti wV anqoV cortou pareleusetai
1:10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.

aneteilen gar o hlioV sun tw kauswni kai exhranen ton corton kai to anqoV autou exepesen kai h euprepeia tou proswpou autou apwleto outwV kai o plousioV en taiV poreiaiV autou maranqhsetai
1:11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

makarioV anhr oV upomenei peirasmon oti dokimoV genomenoV lhyetai ton stefanon thV zwhV on ephggeilato o kurioV toiV agapwsin auton
1:12 Blessed [is] the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

mhdeiV peirazomenoV legetw oti apo tou qeou peirazomai o gar qeoV apeirastoV estin kakwn peirazei de autoV oudena
1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

14

ekastoV de peirazetai upo thV idiaV epiqumiaV exelkomenoV kai deleazomenoV
1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

15

eita h epiqumia sullabousa tiktei amartian h de amartia apotelesqeisa apokuei qanaton
1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

16

mh planasqe adelfoi mou agaphtoi
1:16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.

pasa dosiV agaqh kai pan dwrhma teleion anwqen estin katabainon apo tou patroV twn fwtwn par w ouk eni parallagh h trophV aposkiasma
1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

boulhqeiV apekuhsen hmaV logw alhqeiaV eiV to einai hmaV aparchn tina twn autou ktismatwn
1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

19

wste adelfoi mou agaphtoi estw paV anqrwpoV tacuV eiV to akousai braduV eiV to lalhsai braduV eiV orghn
1:19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

20

orgh gar androV dikaiosunhn qeou ou katergazetai
1:20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

21

dio apoqemenoi pasan ruparian kai perisseian kakiaV en prauthti dexasqe ton emfuton logon ton dunamenon swsai taV yucaV umwn
1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

ginesqe de poihtai logou kai mh monon akroatai paralogizomenoi eautouV
1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

23

oti ei tiV akroathV logou estin kai ou poihthV outoV eoiken andri katanoounti to proswpon thV genesewV autou en esoptrw
1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

24

katenohsen gar eauton kai apelhluqen kai euqewV epelaqeto opoioV hn
1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

25

o de parakuyaV eiV nomon teleion ton thV eleuqeriaV kai parameinaV outoV ouk akroathV epilhsmonhV genomenoV alla poihthV ergou outoV makarioV en th poihsei autou estai
1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth [therein], he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

ei tiV dokei qrhskoV einai en umin mh calinagwgwn glwssan autou all apatwn kardian autou toutou mataioV h qrhskeia
1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion [is] vain.

27

qrhskeia kaqara kai amiantoV para tw qew kai patri auth estin episkeptesqai orfanouV kai chraV en th qliyei autwn aspilon eauton threin apo tou kosmou
1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep himself unspotted from the world.
