The First Book of Moses, called Genesis

Chapter 11

1

And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

2

And it came to pass, as they journeyed2 from the east, that they found4 a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt4 there.

3

And they said4 one to another, Go to,3 let us make4 brick, and burn4 them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had1 they for morter.

4

And they said,4 Go to,3 let us build4 us a city and a tower, whose top [may reach] unto heaven; and let us make4 us a name, lest we be scattered4 abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

5

And the LORD came down4 to see2 the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.1

6

And the LORD said,4 Behold, the people [is] one, and they have all one language; and this they begin53 to do:2 and now nothing 3605 will be restrained11 from them, which they have imagined4 to do.2

7

Go to,3 let us go down,4 and there confound4 their language, that they may not understand4 one another's speech.

8

So the LORD scattered55 them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off4 to build2 the city.

9

Therefore is the name of it called1 Babel; because the LORD did there confound1 the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter52 them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

10

These [are] the generations of Shem: Shem [was] an hundred years old, and begat55 Arphaxad two years after the flood:

11

And Shem lived4 after he begat53 Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat55 sons and daughters.

12

And Arphaxad lived1 five and thirty years, and begat55 Salah:

13

And Arphaxad lived4 after he begat53 Salah four hundred 8141 and three years, and begat55 sons and daughters.

14

And Salah lived1 thirty years, and begat55 Eber:

15

And Salah lived4 after he begat53 Eber four hundred 8141 and three years, and begat55 sons and daughters.

16

And Eber lived4 four and thirty years, and begat55 Peleg:

17

And Eber lived4 after he begat53 Peleg four hundred 8141 and thirty years, and begat55 sons and daughters.

18

And Peleg lived4 thirty years, and begat55 Reu:

19

And Peleg lived4 after he begat53 Reu two hundred 8141 and nine years, and begat55 sons and daughters.

20

And Reu lived4 two and thirty years, and begat55 Serug:

21

And Reu lived4 after he begat53 Serug two hundred 8141 and seven years, and begat55 sons and daughters.

22

And Serug lived4 thirty years, and begat55 Nahor:

23

And Serug lived4 after he begat53 Nahor two hundred years, and begat55 sons and daughters.

24

And Nahor lived4 nine and twenty years, and begat55 Terah:

25

And Nahor lived4 after he begat53 Terah an hundred 8141 and nineteen 8672 years, and begat55 sons and daughters.

26

And Terah lived4 seventy years, and begat55 Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27

Now these [are] the generations of Terah: Terah begat52 Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat52 Lot.

28

And Haran died4 before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.

29

And Abram and Nahor took4 them wives: the name of Abram's wife [was] Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

30

But Sarai was barren; she [had] no child.

31

And Terah took4 Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth4 with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go2 into the land of Canaan; and they came4 unto Haran, and dwelt4 there.

32

And the days of Terah were two hundred 8141 and five years: and Terah died4 in Haran.
